Titanium Grade 9 (UNS R56320), This alloy is sometimes referred to as ¡®half 6-4¡¯. It offers 20 to 50% higher strength than commercially pure grades, but is more formable and weldable than Ti6Al4V.
Titanium alloy Gr9 belongs to one of ¦Á golden phase titanium material, medium strength, non-ageable Ti alloy offering highest strength and design allowables under the pressure vessel code, with good weldability and cold fabricability for mildly reducing to mildly oxidizing media.
Titanium Grade 9 is sometimes referred to as 'half 6-4'. This alloy of titanium with 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium offers 20 to 50% greater mechanical strength than the commercially pure (CP) titanium grades, but is more formable and weldable than Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5).
Titanium alloy Gr9 can be used in higher temperatures than commercially pure titanium grades 1-4, as it can be cold rolled with its excellent corrosion resistance capability its used in industrial, aerospace and sporting equipments. Ti 3-2.5 is also otherwise called half grade of grade 5. Titanium Grades 9 have a density of 4.48 g/cc - less than 60% that of steel.
Titanium Grade 9 Corrosion Resistance:
This material offers good corrosion resistance in oxidising, neutral and mildly reducing media, including chlorides. Titanium Grade 18 with the addition of palladium offers greater resistance to corrosion. The alloy resists oxidation up to 600oF (316oC).
Ti 3-2.5 / Grade 9 Description:
Titanium Alloy 3-2.5 (Grade 9) is a medium strength alloy with good weldability and fabricability for mildly reducing to mildly oxidizing media. It is a compromise between the facility of welding and manufacturing of the pure grades and the high strength of Grade 5. It has great corrosion resistance and can be used extensively in aerospace, chemical processing, medical, marine , automotive.
Typical applications:
Oil and gas industry
Chloride environments such as seawater handling and process systems and hydraulic and process fluid tubes in umbilicals.
Seawater cooling
Tubing for heat exchangers and coolers on oil platforms, in refineries, chemical industries, process industries and other industries using seawater or chlorinated seawater as coolant.
Refineries and petrochemical plants
Tubes and pipes where the process environment contains a high amount of chlorides and sulfides.
Desalination plants
Tube and pipe for seawater transport, heat exchanger tubing, and pressure vessels for reverse osmosis units.
Mechanical components requiring high strength
Propeller shafts and other products subjected to high mechanical load in seawater and other chloride-containing environments.
The weldability of Grade 9 Titanium tubing is very good as long as the necessary precautions are taken. Due to the reactive nature of titanium, inert gas shielding must be in place on both the OD and ID of the tubes. The material must be also free from any grease or oil contamination.
