Titanium machining is rather difficult, do you know why?

Titanium machining is rather difficult, mainly due to the following reasons:

(1) Its poor thermal conductivity results in high cutting temperatures and shortens tool life. When it is more than 600 ¡æ, hard oxide layer occurs on the surface of the tool, causing great damage to the tool.

(2) Low ductility and high hardness makes the shear angle increases The length of the chip in contact with the rake face is small, the stress on the rake face is great, making the cutting edge easily to be damaged.

(3) Low elastic modulus, great elastic deformation and big resilience value of the workpiece surface close to the flank surface lead to large contact area between the machined surface and the flank surface.

(4) High chemical activity: After the processing methods of stamping, forging and hot rolling, the titanium blank forms a hard and brittle uneven skin, which can easily result in chipping; Because of the relatively high chemical activity of titanium, at high cutting temperatures, it will easily absorb oxygen and nitrogen in the air and form a hard and brittle crust; Titanium¡¯s chemical affinity for tool material is strong, the tool is easy to produce adhesive wear under heavy cutting force on the cutting unit area at high temperature.

These features of Titanium cutting process make it comparatively difficult, resulting in low processing efficiency and large tool consumption.
