The Model Material Technology of Titanium Precision Casting


As a very active chemical element, titanium has a great affinity for N, C and O. A small amount of such atoms can reduce the ductility of titanium.

Liquid titanium has chemical reactions with almost all modeling materials to varying degrees, which may enhance the brittleness of titanium castings, increase the thickness of oxygen-rich layer and ¦Á brittle layer. These defects seriously affect the mechanical properties of titanium castings, bringing about greater difficulties to titanium casting.
Modeling material for titanium casting should meet the following basic requirements: 1) no reactions in contact with molten titanium alloy, with high chemical inertness; 2) not softened or broken at the high temperature of the molten titanium alloy, with relatively high refractoriness and thermal shock resistance; 3) not deformed or  broken when being modeled, carried or charged to the furnace, with sufficient strength; 4) low water and gas adsorption capacity; 5) low thermal conductivity to reduce casting defects caused by chilling.
Model Material currently used in this industry partly meet the above requirements and they can be roughly divided into the following four categories: carbon refractories, oxide ceramic materials, metallic materials and other materials.
Titanium casting binder is the most critical part and must meet the operating requirements to be able to bond refractory material. Meanwhile, the calcined product should have good chemical stability to liquid. The binders commonly used in graphite tamping type are phenolic, combined fat, starch and the like, which are organic and there are some residual carbon after the calcination. The investment casting binders commonly used are water glass, silica sol and ethyl silicate, but they are not good binders for titanium alloy precision casting, because the products of these three binders after the calcination contain SiO2, which has the strongest reaction with liquid titanium material. But someone models and casts titanium castings of poor quality by water glass zircon sand. Zirconium sol, zirconium acetate, zirconium¡¯s organic compounds are currently the common binders in titanium alloy investment casting and have satisfied the operating requirements to a certain extent.
